just let me keep my chick peas!

The best part about coming back from a long trip, is unpacking your suitcases. In my case, I forget about a LOT of the things I pack, making unpacking a fun surprise! This time around I completely forgot that I packed a hammer, haha, because who knows how often I find myself in Seoul needing a hammer and not knowing where to buy one?!

I also was pretty pumped about the five pounds of chick peas I managed to bring back with me (they are uber expensive in Korea and only available at foreign food marts okay?). Only I did not for one second forget I packed those. The reason? When I went through security in Grand Rapids they pulled my carry-on over to the side to search it, great. I had NO IDEA that one of my chick pea cans ended up in it! Crap. I don’t know why I did that (especially since my other suitcases were still underweight). The security people were super cool though and let me take it (even though there is liquid inside the can) because they sympathized when I explained my dilemma with chick peas in Korea.

Then I get to Japan. I have to go through security again. They were not so nice and though I tried to explain that I came all the way from Michigan and it was cool with the security in Grand Rapids, the Japanese security personnel were not having it. I walked off in a huff (as one who tends to be dramatic does) only to be chased down by one of the guards telling me I was going the wrong way. I know, I am sooooo cool.

And now I am back in my new apartment in Korea, looking at all the things I need to put away and mentally preparing myself for it. I have already been awake for four and a half hours (its 10 a.m. and if you do the math that means I woke up at 5:30 to the sun streaming through my hot room, after going to bed at 1 a.m.)  and I have already rearranged my room, started unpacking, gone on a long bike ride by the river, taken a shower, went to the bank, and now I have successfully completed a blog post.

good to be home, if only for three nights!

definitely, maybe.

and there goes five weeks. oh man, did that go by fast… as it always does! in between traveling through 19 states (and stopping by our good neighbor Canada-huggsies! the niagara falls is totally better on your side), I attended a wedding, went to a baby shower, celebrated birthdays, wrote a thesis (haha… just kidding, but I started my grad school project document!) and just ‘hung out’ with some pretty amazing people.

but watch out, summer isn’t over yet! tomorrow (today? Tuesday.) I head back to Korea (with bags full of teaching supplies and chick peas… I am totally addicted to hummus) where I will be for about two full days before I leave again. NEPAL. I am so excited for this mission trip.

I am pretty sure I haven’t fully wrapped my mind around leaving my family yet though. tonight my mom cooked up an amazing last meal for me (steak and mashed potatoes with corn and homemade bread- all my favorites! not to mention homemade ice cream with brownies and strawberries for dessert, SO YUM) and we ended the night with watching Definitely, Maybe. I freaking LOVE chick flicks ^^. It felt so normal. Just to be here. Hang out by the pool, drive to a bonfire, worship with my family at The Point (my church in MI), and then tomorrow I fly halfway around the world again.

I have such a blessed life, to be able to have such amazing people who love me all over the world. Already missing my family and friends on this side!

and the story continues…

I apologize. I realize I left you hanging. Days 13 and 14 of my road trip to the Grand Canyon ended with a lot of driving and a day of un-packing, doing laundry, and re-packing. I left for my trip to the east coast last Wednesday morning (I got back from my trip out west around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning) and after eight days I am once again back at my parents pad.

Another 1600 pictures later (none of which have been downloaded onto my computer…oops!) I have many more wonderful memories under my belt from this vacation, and a very very very sore bum!

As I was riding in the/a car… perhaps around the 6,000 mile mark (my first road trip was app. 4,700 miles) I realized that once this summer is over I will have been in five different countries and 19 states. A lovely grandma (she was chaperoning her granddaughter’s school trip) I met at the Natural History Museum in D.C. told me I was going to have to go back to work to rest from my vacation.

Time to write my thesis for grad school and hang out with the family!
